Have a CANT Z 506 which has retired to the beach (in Sicily during WW2). Designed and built by CANT in Italy from 1935 the 506 was originally intended as a bomber, reconnaissance and rescue plane. It was usually used in the latter two roles, being too vulnerable for combat duties.

After Italy decided to retire from military proceedings in 1943 the remaining 506s were used by the Allied (some of the Italians changed their allegiance) and the German sides (some didn’t).

Despite being painted with conspicuous red crosses they were frequently shot down. One British Hurricane pilot shot one down and then proceeded to shoot down the one sent to rescue the crew of the first. He didn’t have any issues with this.

After the war the plane remained in use until 1959.

Looking at the picture I can see this as a scene from a Bond film where our hero arrives at a glamorous beach in his Z 506 and steps out suitably attired to proceed to the nearest casino where he encounters the usual megalomaniac with a cat.

I’m not 100% certain I would a company named CANT to design and build my planes...

Oh well, have something else that’s Italian, green and utilitarian: a Lancia 506.

He didn’t have any issues with this.

This cracked me up. War is hell, I guess. The Viet Cong didn’t have any qualms about shooting at American helos that were marked with a red cross, either.

Yes, the received wisdom is that only those on the losing side of WW2 and every other war were guilty of war crimes. Something that’s far from reality.
